Has just returned from a long trip in the desert and found his letters. Sorry to hear Mrs. McClure is ill. How can he do magazine work here when she is abroad? Sounds as though finances are another worry. Hopes the problem will be short-term. Did he find prospects for a magazine in London? Hard to believe, with his ability and experience, his career will end. Will do anything she can to help. He can write to her in Red Cloud, though she may be in Colorado or Wyoming for several months. Willa Cather [Stout #233]
Wrote to him from New Mexico, but he may not have received letters. Sorry to hear about Mrs. McClure's illness and his business troubles. People should be as generous to him as he has always been to others. Contracts have been changed so much it is hard to know what his share of the company now is. Will help with autobiography without charge for friendship's sake. Hopes she can write the articles as he wants them. He will recall that she couldn't hit what he wanted in some parts of the Christian Science series. Hasn't written a bit since she left New York, but is suntanned and healthy and in good humor again. Hopes people will forget how cross she was. It was from fatigue. Will never let little things bother her so much again. Willa Cather [Stout #235]
Glad he is pleased with the autobiography. Has heard he provided excellent illustrations. Glad to hear his health is good. Willa Cather [Stout #271]
Has been ill; almost had pneumonia. Let Mr. McClure know why she has not written. Can't undertake what he suggests. Hopes to return to 5 Bank Street by the 10th. Willa Cather [Stout #474]
Has had bronchitis, but is getting better. Can he come to dinner on Saturday? Willa Cather [Stout #1168]
Did he receive her note inviting him to dinner? Willa Cather [Stout #1169]
Was hoping to see him before summer, but since it has turned hot is leaving town. Will hope to see him again in the fall. Recalls that he worked well with young people, back in the magazine days, because he had such a spark of youth himself. Willa Cather [Stout #1182]
Very happy to see him last Friday. Would like to tell him sometime all the things that have kept her so preoccupied these past ten years. Supposes she can't visit him at his club, but he could come to the apartment or they could meet somewhere. Hates for him to think she is neglectful of her Chief. Willa Cather [Stout #1669]
Hopes he can come to tea on Wednesday at four. Willa Cather [Stout #1800]
Is worried about her mother and plans to go to Nebraska around the first of the year to spend some time with her. Can't go to England while she is so ill. Please let Mr. McClure know. Is still under doctor's care, but the tablets have helped the bronchitis. Father came and stayed with her for a while. Willa Cather [Stout #1801]
