Spent two weeks in New York getting the winter's work set. Promised the magazine two stories before Christmas. Wants to lengthen the Swedish story and merge it with the other to make a two-part pastoral. British edition of Alexander looks much better than the American. Has been reading Balzac and the disgusting Idiot by Dostoevsky. Thought the first two parts of Creative Evolution [ Bergson ] were splendid. Everyone seems to be celebrating "The Bohemian Girl" except a reader who thought it immoral. W. S. C. [Stout #242]
Likes the jacket, but the copy is wrong—Moonstone, Colorado, not Arizona. Also, Thea and Fred go to Mexico, not New Mexico. Wishes it could say something about her artistic growth in the cliff dweller ruins. Actually, not so very happy with the cover. Couldn't it be more like British edition of Pioneers? Henry James seems patronizing in his essay on the Fieldses. Willa Cather [Stout #311]
Thanks for the gift book about Boston. Is going to New York next week for the rest of the winter. When will British edition be out? W. S. C. [Stout #346]
Has received the $540 check for "The Diamond Mine." Hopes to have some new material for him in the fall. Willa Sibert Cather [Stout #360]
Sending a photo of herself. Willa Sibert Cather [Stout #362]
Sorry not to have anything to send him yet. Will get back to New York in November and start to work. Glad to see the story in McClure's ["The Diamond Mine," Oct. 1916], but they should have let her cut it as she did "My Little Sister" [by Elizabeth Robins, pub. Dec. 1912 and Jan. 1913]. Willa Sibert Cather [Stout #367]
Pleased with his success with this last story. Please ask Harper's to let her have the manuscript back to do a little revision. Willa Cather [Stout #371]
Can have lunch with him on Monday the 18th. May have a manuscript for him. Willa Cather [Stout #373]
Will take $350 for the stories. Suggests he try "Little Annie" on McClure's and Everybody's. Did Smart Set reject "Scandal"? W. S. C. [Stout #391]
Will be back to Bank Street Oct. 10. Making good progress on the novel. Houghton Mifflin urging her to hurry. Sending a rough first draft of a story called "Explosives." Willa S. Cather [Stout #393]
