To Margaret CroftsDec. 13, [1925?]LC

Can't make any engagements during the Christmas season as three family members will be with her. To be honest, will not make any engagements until March. Was lazy during the summer but is working well now and must avoid interruptions. Spontaneous things are all right, but planned engagements clutter her calendar and her mind. Maybe they can meet for tea when she is out for a walk in Central Park?   Willa Cather   [Stout #810]

To Harry Brent Mackoy [attorney in Kenton County, Ky.]Nov. 11, 1926, from New YorkKentucky

Is not related to Catherine D. Cather. Please inform the editor of Onward that she should not make such an assertion again.   Willa Cather   [Stout #859]

To Margaret CroftsJan. 2, [1931?], from the Grosvenor Hotel, New YorkLC

To Sara TeasdaleMay 10, [1931], from Pasadena, Calif.Wellesley  typed transcription at NYPL.

Brought her letter along to California, where mother has been in sanitarium almost three years. Has been with her a lot of the time and has lost track of friends. Book just finished helped her hold together. Zoë has been a good friend. Please send a collection of selected poems. New poets don't let emotion blossom in their poems.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1052]

To Pat KnopfAug. 15, [1933], from Grand MananWellesley

Sorry to hear his vacation was spent having his appendix out. But he will enjoy New Mexico more without one, when he gets to go. Walking a lot here on trails along the cliffs. Saw the Italian air fleet pass over this after-noon—hated their looks.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1188]

To Margaret Crofts,  Saturday [Mar. 31, 1934?] LC

Sorry to hear of her father's death. Has been in splints for torn tendon that became inflamed. Has to see doctors twice a day. Will hope to talk with her soon.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1221]

To Miss Walker [for Margaret Cousins]Feb. 17, 1936HRC

Appreciates the invitation, but doesn't write many short stories and gives Lane [of Woman's Home Companion] the first chance at them.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1296]

To Lydia [Lambrecht]Aug. 10, [1936], from Grand MananWCPM

Did not forget her mother's birthday, but had twin nieces visiting and was busy with them. Has had with her at Grand Manan the quilt they made her.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1321]

To Zoë Akins,  n.d. [Aug. 1936?] , from Grand MananHuntington

Enjoying this cool, green island, the most restful place in the world even without amenities. Nineteen-year-old nieces there with her and love it. Their first time to see the ocean. Feels sure Zoë's house would be too organized for her. Prefers a couch of junipers at the edge of a cliff.   Willa   [Stout #1322]

To Carrie Miner SherwoodSept. 7, [1936], from Grand MananWCPM

Sorry to hear of Margie [Miner] Gund's illness. Has worried a lot about Irene this year. Weather has been nice at Grand Manan, but hasn't enjoyed time there very much. So many deaths and illnesses among people they know there. Did enjoy the twins. Loves Carrie more all the time. P.S.: Going back to New York next week.  Willie   [Stout #1325]
