Hasn't received Anne Douglas Sedgwick's The Little French Girl, as he promised in letter. Please hold September check until further notice, as she will be there and in Jaffrey. Would he have a pound of caramels sent from Mary Elizabeth's [shop]? Isn't he planning a volume of Miss Guiney's poetry? [Happy Endings: The Collected Lyrics of Louise Imogen Guiney, edited by Greenslet, was published in 1927.] Could be working on it while lounging on the cliffs. Willa Cather [Stout #741]
The two pounds of caramels arrived C.O.D., though she feels sure he paid for it. Has begun Sedgwick's book and likes it so far. W. S. C. [Stout #742]
Can't take on a review of [Sinclair?] Lewis's book. Has a pressing commitment. Willa Cather [Stout #876]
Anne Douglas Sedgwick has sent a note written by him praising My Mortal Enemy. Appreciates his favor. Most of her books made out of old memories from which the extraneous has dropped away. Now reading proofs of a book that gave her joy to write, Death Comes for the Archbishop. Willa Cather [Stout #883]
Sending press clippings about honorary degree at Princeton. Sat beside Charles Lindbergh at the formal dinner and had lunch with him and his wife. Hated not to stop in Red Cloud, but will come some day. Willie [Stout #1055]
Princeton festivities went fine. Enjoyed meeting the Lindberghs, especially Mrs. Willa [Stout #1057]
Did not forget their commencement. Has shown their pictures to friends in Pasadena and New York as examples of the fine Bohemian boys in Nebraska. Has had a commencement of her own—honorary degree at Princeton. Met the Lindberghs. Sorry not to stop when she came through, but will be there before another year goes by. Willa Cather [Stout #1058]
The young man's [?] business proposal has destroyed her concentration on a day when she was beginning a new story. Please keep an eye out; will get her lawyer onto it if he makes another move. Why can't people leave her alone? [Several words blotted out.] P.S.: So terrible about the Lindberghs. Willie [Stout #1101]
Weather has been cold since she got back, but once she got over the flu has been going to concerts and operas. Sees Virginia about once a week. Despairing about the Lindberghs' baby! Police don't seem to be doing anything, and no one respects their privacy. When her child arrives, don't smother him with motherly doting. That ruins children. Willa Cather [Stout #1102]
Please write and tell her all about the baby. Lindberghs' ordeal only seems to get worse. What disgusting deception of them! Has been enjoying their quiet cabin and the cool, foggy weather. [signature illegible] [Stout #1114]
