To Hon. William E. ChandlerNov. 29, 1907, from PittsburghNHHS

Is it true he has a diary kept by Dr. E. J. Foster that quotes many of Mrs. Eddy's sayings? May she have access to it? Would quote only with his approval.   Willa Sibert Cather   [Stout #132]

To E. J. Overing, Jr.,  [President of the Red Cloud Board of Education] Apr. 30, 1909 [letter read at 1909 commencement exercises and published in the Red Cloud Chief May 27, 1909] ; WCPM , also Bohlke.

Had hoped to be there for commencement, but is leaving for London on business. Has kept up with Red Cloud schools through brothers and sisters. Remembers with love Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Goudy and Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Case. Mrs. Case, then Miss King, was principal when she first entered the school. Remembers her first teacher and some of her fellow pupils. Always tried to please Miss King, who helped and advised her all through high school—even tried to teach her algebra, an impossibility. Hard to believe it has been nineteen years since she graduated. Best wishes to the new graduates. They should try to live up to their teachers' goals for them.    Willa Cather   [Stout #159]

To Mr. [Malcolm] WyerSept. 6, [1925], from Red Cloud, Nebr.BYU

Appreciates the book he and Mr. Howlett sent. Hopes to see him at the Denver Library again next summer. Leaves for New York tomorrow.   Willa Cather   [Stout #794]

To Francis O. MatthiessenJan. 3, 1927Beinecke

Plans to write a short critical study of Jewett in the next year or so, but that won't prevent his doing so. Suggests he approach Mary Jewett and Dr. Eastman, as well as Ferris Greenslet. Only letters to her from Jewett that she wishes to make public are in the Fields edition.   Willa Cather   [Stout #867]

To Dorothy Canfield Fisher,  n.d. [late Mar., 1927?] UVt

Will look forward to seeing her on April 17. Recommends she read J. W. N. Sullivan's Beethoven.   Willa   [Stout #882]

To Francis W. Talbot, S. J.Oct. 8, 1927, from Shattuck Inn, Jaffrey, N.H.GU

Has received a copy of America with his review of Archbishop; is pleased by his understanding of what she was doing. Prefers to call it a "historical narrative," though publisher refers to it as a novel because the public understands that term. Glad he realizes purpose was to celebrate the lives of two men of real nobility and their relationship with a place. The story really lay in their engagement with that place. P.S.: Would appreciate his sending her another copy of the journal, to send to her father.  Willa Cather   [Stout #904]

To Mary JewettMay 30, 1928, from New YorkHarvard

So appreciated Dr. Eastman's letter. Stopped by Mayo Clinic on the way home, but the problem proved insignificant. Hotel maid promptly fell ill with influenza, and she caught it from her. Was in bed two weeks. Is still quite weak. Will go accept an honorary degree from Columbia June 5, then to Grand Manan with a friend to recuperate. Doesn't feel well enough to stop by Boston. Keeps thinking of her and is glad her nephew wrote.   Willa Cather   [Stout #936]

To Mr. JohnsonJune 18, 1928AAAL

Is attending to Cather's mail while she is at Grand Manan. Is not forwarding letters except from family and close friends, so that she can be free to work. Will show her the letter when she returns.   Sarah J. Bloom, Secretary   [Stout #940]

To Burton J. Hendrick [National Institute of Arts and Letters]Nov. 21, 1929AAAL

Is pleased to learn she has been elected to the Institute. Letter was slow reaching her because of incorrect address; also, has been in Canada. Is mostly in California, due to mother's illness. Very pleased to accept membership. Will hope to see him again soon.   Willa Cather   [Stout #990]

To Carrie Miner SherwoodFeb. 19, [1932]WCPM

Has not written sooner because of influenza soon after getting back. Went to a concert given by Yehudi Menuhin and out to supper with him and has felt unwell ever since. And secretary went away on vacation! Keeps thinking about happy weeks in Red Cloud and visits with Carrie and Mary. Probably it was run-in with Will Auld that has unsettled her. Isn't even sleeping well. He still won't give her the facts on whether the mortgage in question has been recorded.   Willie   [Stout #1097]
