To Mabel Dodge LuhanMay 23, 1925Beinecke

Has just returned from Maine and found her letter waiting. Going to Grand Canyon, then to ranch at Española. May not get to Taos at all, but if it appears she can, will check and see whether there is a house available. Would like to see her house there. Saw Elsie Sergeant yesterday. Sorry to hear Amy Lowell died.   Willa   [Stout #783]

To Mabel Dodge LuhanJune 12, [1925?], from Lamy, N.M.Beinecke

She and friend are just drifting from place to place. Will read proofs [of The Professor's House] at the San Gabriel Ranch near Española. Won't be able to take a house at Taos.   Willa Cather   [Stout #786]

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,  Friday [June 26, 1925?] , from Alcalde, N.M.Beinecke

Sorry to have missed her. Expects to finish proofs Sunday and leave Monday or Tuesday. Might they rent a guest house after all? Doubts advice on manuscript would be worth board for two. If they don't hear from her by phone, will return to Santa Fe.   Willa Cather   [Stout #788]

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,  Monday [July 6, 1925?] , from Santa FeBeinecke

The disagreeable Meyerses, whom they met at Taos, turned up at La Fonda! Is sending some cigarettes. Not very good quality, but no good ones available. These are at any rate fresh. Is receiving letters from people who liked "Tom Outland" in Collier's. Still tracking down old priests. Going to Laguna on Wednesday.   Willa Cather   [Stout #790]

To Mabel Dodge LuhanAug. 7, [1925], from DenverBeinecke

Were delayed at Lamy for three days because of flooding at Trinidad. Delayed at New Laguna [the new pueblo of Laguna was built by religious traditionalists after the original Laguna was successfully evangelized by Christians] for three days before a driver would take them to Acoma. Raining every afternoon. Have been in Denver since July 31. Mother is there and going to theater and for rides. Going to Red Cloud August 12, then to Grand Manan. [Continuation Aug. 8] Letter sent to New York has been forwarded. Liked the quotation from Plotinus [Roman comic playwright] but doesn't know who he is. Likes how first volume of memoir is developing. Weeks at Taos were memorable. Brother and family have arrived. P.S.: Edith Lewis went back to New York on Monday the 3rd.  Willa Cather   [Stout #792]

To Mabel Dodge LuhanMay 26, [1926], from Gallup, N.M.Beinecke

After stopping for a couple of days with her parents and one day at Lamy, reached Gallup very tired. Had the pleasure of sharing that last part of the train trip with Rin Tin Tin [movie star dog] and made his acquaintance during a stop in Albuquerque. Gallup is an awful place. Going to Zuni tomorrow and to Canyon de Chelly later, if Edith recovers from her cold. Brother and family will meet her at Santa Fe June 14. Will get back to work July 1, but not sure where.   W. S. C.   [Stout #832]

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,  Saturday [prob. June 5, 1926] , from Santa FeBeinecke

Would like to rent the pink house for two weeks. Might stay through July if work went well. Edith leaving June 23. Could they have a flat rate for board, as they are used to doing at Grand Manan? Not staying long enough to set up own kitchen. Very comfortable where they are, but too many tourists.   W. S. C.   [Stout #836]

To Mary AustinJune 26, 1926, from Santa FeHuntington

Went to her house a week ago to see if she could work there and has gone back every day since then. Very quiet and congenial. Sits in blue chair with big window open and writes on knee. Likes the big room, breeze coming in at the window. Very generous of her to offer the use of it. Meant to be at Taos, but Tony Luhan has been in hospital in Albuquerque and Mabel with him. Will go in early July, when Miss Foote will be there. Hopes her operation is done soon. Waiting is bad.   Willa Cather   [Stout #840]

To Mabel Dodge LuhanSept. 26, [1926], from Jaffrey, N.H.Beinecke

Plans for new house are wonderful; view will be splendid. May buy or build in Taos herself, but if so, much simpler, more of a hut, with a bare interior like rooms at Isleta [pueblo]. Is staying at Jaffrey until October 20. Serialization of Archbishop in the Forum begins in January.   Willa   [Stout #845]

To Mabel Dodge LuhanSept. 17, [1927], from Jaffrey, N.H.Beinecke

Are there instead of in Rome because of father's illness and the effort of moving out of the apartment. Also, Edith's mother had a stroke. What a year! Book seems to be going well.   Willa   [Stout #900]
