Watching for "The Valley of the Mills" from Mr. Reynolds. Will be glad to give "Mortmain" another reading. Regrets he is taking an ironic tone. Why read and talk at all if one can't be candid?   Willa Sibert Cather   [Stout #115]

To H. G. DwightNov. 21, 1906, on McClure's letterhead ; Amherst

S. S. McClure has reread "The Valley of the Mills" and hopes to see more work from him. Please send his address so she won't have to write through Reynolds.   Willa Sibert Cather   [Stout #118]

To H. G. DwightJan. 12, [1907?], from 60 Washington Square, New YorkAmherst

Envies his being in Italy. Is working on the material about Eddy, after three men failed with it. It drives out every trace of an imaginative idea. Why doesn't he like [Pierre] Loti—afraid of real imagination? He covers up his own with slang and imitations of Kipling. Or maybe he fears being sentimental. McClure has paid $500 for illustrations for "The Valley of the Mills." Was in Pittsburgh a couple of months ago and saw the Willards. Only music saves her in New York. Please ask Mr. Reynolds to send her his work personally.   Willa S. Cather   [Stout #125]

When will she receive proofs? Doesn't want to stop work on some stories and articles until there are enough proofs that she can stick with them.   Willa S. Cather   [Stout #303]

Please have foreign words set in italics. Copyeditor didn't in O Pioneers!. Also names of operatic roles. Hopes he has a proofreader who is fluent in Spanish and someone who can check the German used in the music lessons.   Willa S. Cather   [Stout #304]

To R. L. ScaifeOct. 30, [1915], from PittsburghHarvard

Thinks the ad is unexciting. Why not quote some of the really live statements in reviews? Has redone the ad proposing some other quotations. [Encloses example.] Has sent her Nation to Will Owen Jones for reprint.   Willa Cather   [Stout #329]

To Ferris GreensletNov. 1, [1915], from PittsburghHarvard

Has written to McClure about providing a sketch, but he is away in Texas. Will try to write the article for Book News if he will send more specific instructions. Let Mr. Scaife know about the quotable reviews in the Boston Advertiser and the New Bedford Standard. P.S.: Wondering if it will be reviewed in the Atlantic.  Willa Cather   [Stout #330]
