To Dorothy Canfield,  Thursday [Aug. 7, 1902] from American Express office in Paris, postcard ; UVt

Has taken pictures to be developed, shopped with Miss [Evelyn] Osborne for underclothes, and overeaten on Mme Sibut's excellent fish. Please scold the laundress who failed to return a set of underwear.    Willa   [Stout #75]

To Mariel GereAug. 28, [1902] from ParisWCPM

Has been there four weeks; meant to write sooner. She and Isabelle like the Sibuts, at whose pension they are staying. Disagree as to whether they like Mlle Céline [Sibut]. Dorothy spent three weeks with them in London and accompanied them to Paris but now has gone back to Scotland. Went to Barbizon with a school friend of Dorothy's. Will soon leave for a walking tour of Provence and the Mediterranean coast. Enjoyed a walking tour to the Oise Valley.   Willa   [Stout #76]

To Dorothy Canfield,  Sunday [Dec. 18, 1904] UVt

Has received her telegram about "The Profile." Character resembles Miss Osborne only in that she has a scar, not uncommon. Miss Osborne shouldn't take it as a reference to herself. Sorry Dorothy is upset.   Willa   [Stout #100]

To Dorothy Canfield,  n.d. [c. Jan. 5, 1905] UVt

Can't withdraw the story without canceling the entire volume, which is already in type. Doubts Miss Osborne will ever see it, let alone take it to heart. Does not agree it is a portrait of her. Isabelle, who has a strong moral sense, does not see anything wrong. This has spoiled the pleasure in her first book of fiction. Wouldn't ask such a thing of anyone. Is very hurt by Dorothy's attitude.   Willa   [Stout #101]

To F. Scott FitzgeraldApr. 28, 1925Princeton

Enjoyed his book [ The Great Gatsby ] and never even supposed the passage he points out was derived from A Lost Lady. Inevitable that in describing beauty one could only write about the feelings it evoked in oneself.   Willa Cather   [Stout #781]

To Mary Miner CreightonSept. 17, [1927] from Jaffrey, N.H.Newberry  Pub. in Red Cloud Chief Oct. 20, 1927; quoted in Bohlke.

Will be glad to write the inscription for the memorial to Mrs. Brodstone [mother of Evelyn Brodstone] at the hospital. Remembers her well. Glad to hear she saw father and mother out driving.   [Stout #899]

To Carrie Miner SherwoodApr. 21, 1930, from New YorkWCPM

Not going to Oberammergau after all, but may see her in Paris. Doesn't know what her banker will be, to receive mail. Will have to wait for consecration of father's window at the church. Maybe at Christmas, when Elsie will be there. Paying for it herself, as care of mother is a strain for everyone. Sanitarium is best possible, but can't make paralysis anything but miserable. Comes away feeling very low every time she is there. P.S.: Hopes Evelyn Brodstone is better.  Willie   [Stout #1011]

To Mary Miner CreightonDec. 6, [1936]Newberry

Sorry not to have written in so long. Just back from Washington, where an old friend died. Did not know about Margie's death until later. How is Irene? She never answers letters. May have said or done something that offended her. Still gets the Red Cloud newspaper. Heard Evelyn Vesty was there for Louie's funeral. He was one of those who never grow up. Maybe that's the way to be happy. Glad her father did not live to see these hard times. Had hoped to be in Red Cloud for Christmas, but will not be able to get away. Has just received a huge gardenia bush from the Menuhins for her birthday. Would like to go see the Menuhins, but can't rest when she is with them, they are too exciting and she enjoys them too much. Did enjoy the twins' visit this summer. Sorry to be so gloomy, but is feeling tired. Always so much pointless activity when something new is published.   Willie   [Stout #1335]

To Evelyn ScottOct. 5, 1939HRC

Has recently come back from a long stay abroad [?] and is trying to catch up on letters. Only agent she knows is Paul Reynolds. Sorry to hear magazines' editorial policies are determined by politics. Doesn't believe it is true in all cases.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1456]

To Elsie CatherDecember 22, [1937]UNL-Rosowski Cather

Appreciates Elsie's letter about the service for the window [a window in Grace Episcopal Church dedicated for their mother, Mary Virginia "Jennie" Boak Cather] and all the old friends in Red Cloud. Has sent notes in Christmas cards to many of them. Overlooked Mrs. Warren, but did remember Mrs. Macfarland in California. Has been busy. The Menuhins came recently, and the mother is quite sick and bedridden, so spent time with the girls until Yehudi and their father came to New York from New Orleans. Douglass was visiting; spent as much time with him as possible. Saw Yehudi's dramatic performance at Carnegie Hall with him. Since Mary Virginia was working, and since she did not want to invite people outside the family, had a quiet, delightful dinner on her birthday with just Douglass and Edith. Douglass really came to New York to consult a heart specialist, who said he was fine. Enclosed a check to spend on something fun. Merry Christmas.   Willie
