To Mr. Gluck,
Jan. 21, 1925, transcription by
E. K. Brown
; Beinecke
Glad he is using My
Ántonia in his course on contemporary fiction. First book in which she
discarded conventional elements of a novel. Story of a man and woman who are friends, never
lovers. Story not made up of the things that usually make up novels. Like the back side of the
carpet.

Enjoyed reading his students' themes. They all seem to have problems with the terms
"romantic" and "realistic." Must learn that "romantic novel" does not mean a love story, but is
a two-word noun for a novel with a definite plot. Couldn't write such a novel if she tried.
