To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
May 23, 1925
; Beinecke
Has just returned from Maine and found her letter
waiting. Going to Grand Canyon, then to ranch at Española. May not get to Taos at all, but
if it appears she can, will check and see whether there is a house available. Would like to see
her house there. Saw Elsie Sergeant
yesterday. Sorry to hear Amy Lowell died.

; Beinecke
She and friend are just drifting from place to place. Will read proofs [of The Professor's
House] at the San Gabriel Ranch near Española. Won't be able to take a house at
Taos.

[June 26, 1925?]
, from Alcalde, N.M.
; Beinecke
Sorry to have missed her. Expects to finish proofs Sunday and leave Monday or Tuesday. Might
they rent a guest house after all? Doubts advice on manuscript would be worth board for two. If
they don't hear from her by phone, will return to Santa Fe.

The disagreeable Meyerses, whom they met at Taos, turned up at La Fonda! Is sending some cigarettes. Not very good quality, but no
good ones available. These are at any rate fresh. Is receiving letters from people who liked
"Tom Outland" in Collier's. Still tracking down old priests.
Going to Laguna on Wednesday.

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
Aug. 7, [1925], from Denver
; Beinecke
Were delayed at Lamy for three days because
of flooding at Trinidad. Delayed at New Laguna [the new pueblo of Laguna
was built by religious traditionalists after the original Laguna was successfully evangelized
by Christians] for three days before a driver would take them to Acoma. Raining every
afternoon. Have been in Denver since July 31.
Mother is there and going to
theater and for rides. Going to Red Cloud
August 12, then to Grand Manan. [Continuation Aug. 8] Letter sent to New York has been forwarded. Liked the quotation from
Plotinus
[Roman comic playwright] but doesn't know who he is. Likes how
first volume of memoir is developing. Weeks at Taos were memorable. Brother and family have
arrived. P.S.: Edith Lewis went back to New York on Monday the 3rd.

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
May 26, [1926], from Gallup,
N.M.
; Beinecke
After stopping for a couple of days with her parents and one day at Lamy, reached Gallup very tired. Had the pleasure of sharing that last part of the train trip with
Rin Tin Tin
[movie star dog] and made his acquaintance during a stop in Albuquerque. Gallup is an awful place. Going to Zuni tomorrow and to Canyon
de Chelly later, if Edith recovers from her cold.
Brother and family will meet her at Santa Fe June 14. Will get back to work July 1, but not sure
where.

[prob. June 5, 1926]
, from Santa Fe
; Beinecke
Would like to rent the pink house for two weeks. Might stay through July if work went well.
Edith leaving June 23. Could they have a flat rate for
board, as they are used to doing at Grand
Manan? Not staying long enough to set up own kitchen. Very comfortable where they are,
but too many tourists.

N.H.
; Beinecke
Plans for new house are wonderful; view will be splendid. May buy or build in Taos herself, but if so, much simpler, more of a
hut, with a bare interior like rooms at Isleta [pueblo]. Is staying
at Jaffrey until October 20.
Serialization of Archbishop in the Forum begins in
January.

Are there instead of in Rome because of father's illness and the effort of moving out of the
apartment. Also, Edith's
mother had a stroke. What a year! Book seems to be going
well.

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
July 1, [1930], from Paris
; Beinecke
Her article on Lawrence captures him better than
anyone else has done. So glad to hear that Jeffers
liked Archbishop.
Admires his "Roan
Stallion" and "Night."
Paris has deteriorated, more like New York now. Wouldn't have come except to see a
seriously ill friend. Misses New Mexico and is tired of festivities.

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
Jan. 17, [1931?], from New
York
; Beinecke
Very much admires Lorenzo
in Taos
[published in 1932; she must have seen manuscript or proof]. It
equals the Buffalo section of Intimate Memories. Whether one agrees or not with the views of
the people, they are well presented. Lawrence
himself is caught better than anyone else has ever caught him, down to his giggle, or snicker.
Country itself has its own life, and Tony's car takes on
real significance. Edith away for a week, but read it,
too. Is leaving for California before long.
Mother about the same. Hopes to
go to Mexico City before long.

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,

; Beinecke
Will write a proper letter after Yehudi Menuhin
sails next week. Was sick with influenza all of February and since then trying to catch up on
all sorts of things. Has a copy of Lorenzo and will write about it soon.

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
Nov. 22, [1932], from Grosvenor Hotel, New York
; Beinecke
She and Edith have leased an apartment and are
decorating it. Almost ready to move in. Edith very busy
at work; hopes she will resign soon. What about Mary
Austin's
book
[Earth Horizon]? So full of special pleading and self-pity. Not
true Archbishop was
written in Austin's house—didn't even
want to go to the house, but had to, to be polite. Couldn't help it the archbishop was French.
Houghton Mifflin had to make deletions
[from Earth Horizon] after some 30,000 copies were sold, under threat of lawsuit by
H. G. Wells. Has she read Hemingway's fine new book
[Death in the Afternoon]? Would like to go to Mexico this winter, but must get settled first. Has heard lots of people
talking about Lorenzo in
Taos.

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
Dec. 14, [1933?], from 570 Park Avenue,
New York
; Beinecke
Found her letter waiting when she returned from New
Hampshire. Glad she is having her portrait done. Enjoyed being lazy all summer, but
worked hard during the fall. Anticipates a good musical season in New York and is looking forward to the Menuhins' arrival in January. Does she know where Elsie Sergeant is?

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,

Sorry to have missed her. Wish she had stayed at the Grosvenor while she was in town. Hand
out of splints but not useful yet. Enjoyed Four Saints
[in Three Acts; New
York premiere on February 20, 1934].

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
Feb. 5, 1936
; Beinecke
Enjoyed her Christmas card, with its sprig of sage. Spent a very pleasant time in Italy latter part of summer after wearing herself out caring
for a sick friend. Returned shortly
before Christmas. Enjoyed the rough passage, but Edith
so sick she had to be carried off the boat. Still hasn't caught up on her letters. Doesn't she
like the Anne Lindbergh
book!

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
Dec. 18, 1936
; Beinecke
Was glad to receive her letter, but it creates a problem. Would be glad to contribute to the
hospital, but is already contributing heavily to old friends in Nebraska who are in absolute penury from drought. Is cutting back on
Christmas presents to do all she can for these people. Government relief seems to go only to
those who won't work, and the New Deal has cut into her income from investments. Hope things
not as bad in New Mexico as in Nebraska.

To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
June 30, 1938
; Beinecke
Brother Douglass died of a heart attack in early
June. He had spent her birthday with her last December in New York. Is having trouble getting over it. P.S.: Got a laugh for the first time in a long while from The Laughing Horse
[satirical literary magazine published in Taos, N.M., by Witter Bynner's secretary and friend Spud Johnson]. It caught Mary Austin and Mabel herself quite well.

To Mabel Dodge Luhan
[from Sarah J. Bloom,
secretary],
July 28, 1942
; Beinecke
Cather has undergone surgery for removal of gall bladder and appendix. Will be at
Presbyterian Hospital until August 15. Registered under Edith
Lewis's name, so no letters should be sent there and she does not want flowers, as
she finds it distressing to see them neglected. [Stout
#1585]
To Mabel Dodge Luhan,
n.d.
; Beinecke
Interesting how people differ in what part of Mabel's manuscript they like best. The "Green Horses" section seems to her a real
work of art, much more significant than the rest, perhaps because it is drawing on early
memories and a child has the artist's eye that adults lose. Buffalo is established as a world
of its own.
