To Mariel Gere,
Apr. 24, 1912, from Winslow, Ariz.
; WCPM
Has just learned of Mrs. Gere's death. Hard
to believe. Can still hear her laughter at the pretensions of young people. Benefited from that
laugh when she was an unpolished country girl. Always coveted Mrs. Gere's good opinion. Health is better; is visiting
Douglass.

Children not so changed as she expected; mother better than reports had indicated. Very hot; doubts she can work. Mrs. Garber doesn't go out any more. Hopes Mariel is better.

Why don't the girls write? Is lonely, not during work days but at night. Has her own stenographer
and entire responsibility for the first issue, even overseeing layout. Is arranging for
material for September issue [of Home Monthly]. Wants to do article on Mrs. William Jennings Bryan and Mrs. William McKinley. Please help get personal
details about Mrs. Bryan. Magazine not much as
literature, but hopes to make a success of it. Is behaving.

To Mariel Gere,
n.d.
[Sept. 30, 1905?]
; WCPM
Appreciated her long letter. Missed Mr. Gere during
her visit to Lincoln. Spent a week in Cheyenne with Douglass and a week camping in the Black Hills with Roscoe, then four weeks in Red
Cloud helping her father around the new
house. Jessie expecting a baby. Mrs. Garber still charming but sad from missing
Mr. Garber, though he was a care. Wishes she could
live in the West. Getting settled into school work again. Love to Mrs. Gere and to Ellen and Frances, and greetings to the
Joneses and others.
