- Jim Burden did not believe that Mr. Shimerda was in torment, as Ambrosch said, but his mind was unsettled about the ideas of punishment. He recalled Dives in torment, but rejected that for Mr. Shimerda. "Mr. Shimerda had not been rich and selfish: he had only been so unhappy that he could not live any longer."
