In "The Prodigies," Leschetizky, Harriet Norton's professor, alludes to a line in "The Lost Leader" when Harriet decides to give up her musical career to marry Nelson Mackenzie: "Blot out his name, then, record one lost soul more."

In essay on Oscar Wilde after his second sodomy trial, Cather uses Browning's line: "His name is 'Marked with a blot, damned in the book of Heaven.'"
