Note Relating to Cather

In an essay titled "Poets of Our Younger Generation," Cather says, "The schoolboy is taught that Bryant was the first American poet who was able to rid himself of English traditions and write of the flowers and hills and rivers of his own country, rather than of those familiar to him only through his study of English classics."

In an essay titled "Poets of Our Younger Generation," Cather says, "Longfellow, Bryant, Holmes, Lowell and even Whittier for the most part endeavored to apply the methods and sentiment of English poetry to their New World environment."
