Note Relating to Cather

In a letter, Cather writes that she "Still remembers when she first read Flaubert in Red Cloud, and later with George Seibel in Pittsburgh." The essay "A Chance Meeting" portrays her discussion of Flaubert with his niece, Madame Franklin Grout.

In a 1900 Courier article, Cather writes: "Flaubert said that a drop of water contained all the elements of the sea, save one -- immensity."
