Note Relating to Cather
In The Song of the Lark, when trouble threatens, Mrs. Tellamantez soothes herself by combing her long black hair. Thea reflects, "Mexican women are like the Spartans; when they are in trouble, in love, under stress of any kind, they comb and comb their hair." See Herodotus, book 7, chs. 207-209, for a description of a spy reporting that the Spartans were combing their hair--as if they were in danger (March 724).
