Note Relating to Cather
"It is a rather strong and beautiful thing, that bond of sympathy which exists between women who are tired of men and very young women who known nothing of them except by hearsay.... It is about the only kind of friendship possible between women, and of course when reduced to the last analysis it is possible only because of their unconscious attitude toward men. The eternal fact of sex seems to be at the bottom of everything. But after people have ceased to seek for love there is one thing that they seem to go on seeking for, and that is sympathy"; Diana of the Crossways is one of very few texts to offer a "true and possible presentation of the case."
