In an 1894 Journal article, Cather mentioned in review of Beau Brummell: "The whole play is like a chapter from Henry Esmond, in some way it was entirely Thackerayesque. It was saturated with the spirit, the time and people that Thackeray preferred to deal with."

In a Home Monthly article Cather writes: "The greatest of all English novels."
