To S. S. McClureJune 9, 1912, from Lamy, N.M.Indiana

Has just returned from a long trip in the desert and found his letters. Sorry to hear Mrs. McClure is ill. How can he do magazine work here when she is abroad? Sounds as though finances are another worry. Hopes the problem will be short-term. Did he find prospects for a magazine in London? Hard to believe, with his ability and experience, his career will end. Will do anything she can to help. He can write to her in Red Cloud, though she may be in Colorado or Wyoming for several months.   Willa Cather   [Stout #233]

Back on old paths, a big, beautiful country, all golden-brown.   W. S. C.   [Stout #286]

To Ferris Greenslet,  Wednesday [prob. July 21, 1915] , from New YorkHarvard

Will send the epilogue next week. There isn't a prologue. Leaving for Pittsburgh tomorrow, so send proofs to 1180 Murray Hill. Leaving for Colorado and New Mexico on August 6. Please send a sample of the new cover before then.   Willa Cather   [Stout #314]

To Elizabeth Shepley SergeantJuly 28, [1915], from PittsburghPM

Was about to sail for Germany when Judge McClung decided Isabelle must not go. Will start for Durango August 6. Proofs are finished. Even the page proofs needed a lot of correction. Loves North of Boston [Frost], so bare and strong. Knowing real poetry is being written enables her to tolerate even the likes of Witter Bynner.   W. S. C.   [Stout #317]

To R. L. ScaifeAug. 3, [1915], from PittsburghHarvard

New cover is fine. Leaves for Durango on Friday [August 6]. Uncertain where she'll be the next few weeks.   Willa Cather   [Stout #318]

Will be in Red Cloud for a month starting September 10. Going to Wyoming first. Is Heinemann bringing out the book in England?  P.S.: What is the publication date? W. S. C.  Willa Cather   [Stout #321]

To Ferris GreensletSept. 13, [1915], from Red Cloud, Nebr.Harvard

Good work on the publicity booklet and poster. Thanks for the advance copy. Likes the cover, jacket, and type. Has excellent photos of Mesa Verde provided by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, also of Taos and the pueblos near Santa Fe. Would he still like to have a book about the Southwest? Might be able to travel for free on Santa Fe next summer to gather additional material. Unfortunately, has gained six pounds while climbing and riding. Edith lost weight.   W. S. C.   [Stout #322]

Just got her letter. Gained five pounds at Mesa Verde. Had a bad time in the worst canyon in Colorado; got some bruises. Has received an advance copy of the book—terrible proofreading. Surely a good proofreader would have caught the errors she missed herself. Has learned a lesson about hurrying a book. Has marvelous photos of the Southwest. Has Elsie seen A Boy's Will [ Frost ]? It's even better than North of Boston.   W.   [Stout #323]

To Ferris GreensletJune 30, [1916 ?], from Brown Palace Hotel, DenverHarvard

Paul Reynolds sold the clumsy story she told him about for $600. Is on her way to Taos. Hopes he will remember she still wants to do a book about the Southwest and will not commit to anyone else for one.   W. S. C.   [Stout #359]
