Appreciates her note about Youth and the Bright Medusa. Willa Cather [Stout #523]
Sorry to have left town without seeing her and Mrs. [Franz?] Boas. Sinclair Lewis said such nice things in his Toronto lecture that she had to beg people to leave her alone so she could work. Health is better than when she left. Novel progressing. Sending a snapshot taken when she was in the Mediterranean. Willa Cather [Stout #544]
Has been in the country with friends. Just found her note today. Has not been well. Only saw Mrs. [Franz?] Boas once all winter. Tonsillectomy was difficult, and she felt worse after she returned from the sanitorium. Also occupied with proofs. Sorry not to be available to visit. Willa Cather [Stout #600]
Has been busy with publication details of new book, but enjoying summer trip. Will stay here until about October 1. Is enjoying the quiet and hiking along the cliffs. Willa Cather [Stout #617]
Check is to repay her for the bag purchased at Marshall Fields. Josephine is ill; dining at the Wolcott tonight [reason this is on Wolcott stationery]. Knopfs both ill with influenza and had to delay sailing until next Saturday. Please send recipe for Charlotte Russe. Still has a cough. Willie [Stout #671]
Has had trouble with a stiff neck and is out today for the first time. Hopes to see her soon. Willa Cather [Stout #722]
Glad to hear from her and get her correct address. Glad her health holds up. Please pass along greetings to Mrs. [Franz?] Boas. Hopes she will like the remembrance of a pleasanter New York, about 1904, in the new book. Can't stand New York now unless she gets away most of the year. Willa Cather [Stout #852]
Is in the Italian Alps, on the Austrian border. Sends love to her, Lydia, and Pauline. Willa Cather [Stout #1016]
Please have Mrs. Burden [storekeeper] pack up a box of Christmas groceries for Mrs. Lambrecht and purchase some good coffee for Annie Pavelka. Has sent Annie a check and some discarded clothes. Is sending a check to [name blocked out]. But the spectacle of poverty may be even harsher in the city. Willie [Stout #1205]
Please pick out some good canned fruit for Mrs. Lambrecht's birthday. It's terribly hot in New York, but has stayed in town to finish Lucy Gayheart. To be serialized in Woman's Home Companion starting in April 1935, preceding book publication. Magazine's offer was too good to refuse. Sorry they are having such a drought. Expects to leave for Grand Manan mid-month. Willie [Stout #1228]
