Enjoyed her three weeks at Bread Loaf except for possible attack of appendicitis, but is tired and glad to get to Grand Manan. Has written a longish short story [perhaps "Uncle Valentine"]. May have to have an appendectomy soon. Must get to Nebraska in late fall.   Willa   [Stout #615]

To Pat [Knopf],  n.d. [spring 1925?] UVa

Appreciated his Easter greeting and candy. Glad he likes the new story ["Uncle Valentine"?, Feb., March 1925] and Ántonia. Some day he will realize A Lost Lady is a better book than O Pioneers!.   Willa Cather   [Stout #780]

To Miss LaneDec. 21, 1925UVa

Sorry she can't send a short story, but hasn't written one since "Uncle Valentine." Prefers working in the novel form, and has now begun a new one.   Willa Cather   [Stout #813]

To Mary Virginia Auld, Saturday [Feb. 19, 1927] UNL , copy, not original.

Appreciated the valentine treat, which helped cheer her up from a period of feeling down, mainly because she can't look forward to another writing project as rewarding as Archbishop. Has been to a Rin Tin Tin movie. Steichen is coming to dinner; will wear her beautiful new dress. Is reading proofs with Edith.   W. S. C.   [Stout #875]

To Virginia CatherFebruary 13, [1914], from 5 Bank Street, New YorkUNL-Rosowski Cather

Is embarrassed that she only writes when ill, but got a terrible infection all over the back of her head after getting scratched by a collar pin. Might have to have head shaved for an operation at the hospital, but is trying to draw the infection to a head for lancing. Is taking a lot of morphine to help her sleep. Isabelle is coming; it seems every time she visits she has misfortunes on her hands. Is especially disheartened because of the expense and the distraction from her writing. Is like her [mother] in being so very ill whenever she is sick. Remembers Dr. McKeeby lancing mother's ulcerated face from the infected tooth. Blood poisoning is especially agonizing in the taut skin on one's head. Didn't send a Valentine because is completely overcome by illness.   Willie
