I want to send a little check to you for the Red CrossCross, and I hope you can use ten of the
twenty-five dollars to get little comforts for my old
friend Mrs Earnest
Welch3, and give her my good wishes.
I am not very well, dear Carrie, or I would write you a long letter. Tell Irene4 I got the Hambourgs5 off on ⬩W⬩S⬩C⬩ their boat today. Isabelle looked very frail. I am starting for Italy6 next week, and I hope a couple of months there will make a new creature of me. I’m pretty limp just now. I want to be all alone up in the lakes7 for awhile. I think that’s the best way to recover your soul when you’ve lost it for a time.
Very lovingly Willie
