My Dear Elsie1;

I have waited a long while for the letter that you promised to write me about your summer, but so far it has not come. However, the Grand Manan3 postmaster has sometimes forwarded letters to the wrong address, so I may have missed a letter which will find me later. I have been here for two weeks, and shall go down to New York4 on October third, to the Grosvenor5.

I think I told you I would contribute three hundred dollars toward this year's expenses and repairs on the house6, and I am sending you a check for the amount still due. The amount I paid Carrie Sherwood7 of course included hose, sprinklers, etc. I forget the items, but she sent me an itemized account.

I am sending Mollie8 a check for fifty dollars, which I have meant to send her for a long while. I only hope she won't be offended! Her making use of the velvet dress encourages me.

Where is Bess9 now? And by the way, please let me know about the expenses of her illness this summer10. If you kept her and looked after her, surely I should pay for her doctor and medicines. I hope you will have time to write me about your summer, if you have not done so already, and I hope the year has started well for you.

With love and good wishes, Willie
