The horrible increase in railroad and Pulman fares made Wyoming7 out of the question for both Miss Lewis8 and me. But mother9 says you may be in Red Cloud10 this summer with West Virginia11. I will be there by the 15th (fifteenth) of August to stay a month. Do try to Steam Heat

Isn't the news from France12 glorious? I was so proud of G.P13's citation14. It was published in all the New York15 papers and dozens of people called me up to ask if he were any kin of mine. It seems to be such a useful sort of bravery that he was cited for—so much more useful than if had brought in a wounded conrade comrade.

I am here in this quiet hotel in the woods reading the proofs of my new book16, and hope to finish them by the 6th of August. It's a queer sort of book. It's at least not like either of the others17. Did you know that both the others18 are studied in a good many colleges now, for "style"?
