passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
I at last had time to stop at the bank long enough to deposit the check for
$1,000 you so kindly sent me. I didn't have time to go down and make the
proper credit on your note, which is in my safety deposit box. I am
therefore enclosing a receipt which I wish you to hold until I can get down
to the bank again. My tardiness in acknowledging and depositing the check
must seem to you very ungrateful, but this house3 has been full of paperers and painters for the last
week and I was forced to take refuge in the Hotel Lowell5, only a few doors from this apartment
house, where Douglass6 stayed during
his brief stay in New York2.
Isabelle's7
death8 has made the days drag
pretty heavily for me. I have expected it9 for three years, but the shock was none the less easy
when it came. The cable telling me of her death reached me just four months
after Douglass' death10. My
fright about your post-operation11
[illegible]
hemorrhage
(fool secretary) clouded the shock
of Isabelle's death for a few days, but now that has come back in its full
force. I scarcely know where I myself begin or end, in a world without Isabelle.
in it.
Please keep the enclosed slip; my mental operations are a little shaky these days.
Lovingly WilliePlease send Margaret's12 address again. Meta's13 letter lost in the shower of letters and cables following Isabelle's death.
