Thank you for Mrs. Winslow4's book5. I like it very much, though the theme and her statement of it seem to me better than her development of it.
I strongly object to appearing in Mr. Burnett6's new anthology7. Someone might tell him (he would never know otherwise) that the "Archbishop"8 runs a little toward "religious experience,"9 and he may approach you. I really wouldn't like him to use any of the book, not even the chapters which have already been serialized, for any price. He seems to be such a conspicuously cheap guy. Don't you hate these fat parasites who take no risks and gorge on the selections of legitimate publishers? I do!
ASTICOU INNThe weather reports from New York10 are
discouraging. Never the less I am tired of living in woolen suits and sitting by the
fire. On fair days I get in a good deal of walking on wood trails, which I haven't
done for two summers. The fair days here2
are heavenly, but it rains one day out of three. There is a good set of Parkman11 here, and it is interesting to track
down the situation of the very early (1605) and abortive French settlements of on this island.
The food continues bad. I cannot eat fish three times a day, so I subsist mainly on milk and Swedish biscuit and blueberries. Tell Blanche12 I may challenge her to a weight contest when I get back to town.
Yours always Willa Cather
