To Ferris GreensletMar. 2, [1919], from New YorkHarvard

When does he leave for England? Is sending a note from H. L. Mencken, in response to hers thanking him for his review. A Mr. Melchers, of some magazine for booksellers, has been urging her to stick with midwestern material, not shift to New York.   W. S. C.   [Stout #453]

To Edith Abbott,  n.d. [prob. June 20, 1924] , from Red Cloud, Nebr.Chicago

Has been thinking about her; hopes she will drop everything and get away to England. Mustn't get weighed down by routine, but leave the day-to-day chores in the hands of others and get away while she can, before she is utterly exhausted. Please reply she has bought her ticket.   W. S. C.   [Stout #736]

To [ Helen Sprague? ] [prob. December 1932] , fragment ; WCPM

P.S.: Obscure Destinies selling well in England. The pianist Myra Hess came by and said her friends were praising it, and reported good words John Galsworthy had asked her to convey.  P.S.: Sorry little Bernard is ill, making Christmas sad.  W.   [Stout #1138]

To Mrs. William Stix [Yaltah Menuhin]Apr. 11, [1939]Princeton

Yehudi surprised her for Easter with some recordings made in England not released in the U.S. One was their recording of Mozart's Sonata in B-flat. Has enjoyed it. Glad she is living where the weather is sunny. Very cold in New York. P.S.: Stephen is at Rhodes.  Aunt Willa   [Stout #1449]

To Ferris GreensletOct. 19, 1939Harvard

Thanks for the books. Notes errors in biographical information on William Archer, whom she knew beginning in 1908. Attended George Meredith's funeral with Archer in London and sat with him in [William Butler] Yeats's box with Lady Gregory at a performance by the Abbey Theatre Company in London. He was one of the first critics to recognize John Millington Synge's work. Was a great enthusiast of Ibsen and translated several of his plays. Hopes this can be corrected.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1458]

To Van Wyck BrooksOct. 26, 1940Penn

Writing to call his attention to an error on page 434 of his book on New England. Not true she edited the letters of Sarah Wyman Whitman.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1499]

To Julian StreetOct. 26, 1940Princeton

Returned from Canada only a few days ago [?] to find even the poorest quality wines very expensive. Appreciates his sharing Margaret Kennedy's letter about quality of life in England nowadays. Wants to show it to her niece before returning it. Hopes he will like the new book. Not true it was five years in the writing, since for much of that time she wasn't writing at all. P.S.: Has received a case of Sancerre Sauvignon 1938, from the Anjou region. Does he know it?  Willa Cather   [Stout #1501]
