To Dorothy Canfield FisherSept. 2, [1916]UVt

Just reached Red Cloud after a summer in New Mexico and Wyoming. Enjoyed Roscoe and his family, especially the twins. Made a talk about The Bent Twig [Canfield Fisher's novel, 1915] to a bridge club. Interesting that they both used the same kind of treatment for such different material. Sympathizes with the character who fled moral restrictions. The mother reminds her of a stalwart woman who came to visit Fremstad when she was in Maine—such wisdom. They have different groups of readers in Lincoln. Dorothy's think Cather immoral, and her own think Dorothy boring. All of Dorothy's readers want to believe Thea didn't live with Fred out of wedlock.   Willa   [Stout #366]

To Elizabeth Shepley SergeantJune 23, [1917?] from Red Cloud, Nebr.PM

Can't suggest anything new to read. Most new books disappointing. Elsie might try Mary Austin's The Ford. Came to Nebraska to receive an honorary doctorate. Edith Abbott, Jane Addams's assistant, awarded honorary degree at the same time, the first given by the University of Nebraska to women. Then more than a week of visiting, until tea parties became repetitious and tiresome. Nebraska is in a heat wave plus burning with patriotism. Is going to Wyoming soon.   W. S. C.   [Stout #387]

To Ferris GreensletJune 25, [1917], from Red Cloud, Nebr.Harvard

Came west to receive an honorary degree from the University of Nebraska. Now at home. Will go on to Wyoming soon, or may join Isabelle in New Hampshire. Nebraskans are very pro-war.   Willa S. C.   [Stout #388]

To George SeibelFeb. 22, 1927WCPM

Has no address in New York just now, but stays at hotels when in town. Now on her way to visit her brother in Wyoming. Glad to hear he and Mrs. Seibel are well. Is well herself, when not in the city.   Willa Cather   [Stout #877]

To Mary Virginia Auld, Wednesday [June 8, 1927] UNL , copy, not original

Leaving Sunday for Wyoming. Noise of the subway is a torture. They are emptying the apartment. Suggests she stay at the New Willard when in Washington. Didn't go to Winchester; to get out of attending a banquet there, told people she would be in Wyoming on May 31. Will probably be in Red Cloud in about a month. Can all meet there and dance the Charleston on the new rug. P.S.: Sending address of Howard Gore.  Willa   [Stout #887]

To Blanche Knopf,  n.d. [c. June 12, 1927] HRC

For next three weeks send mail care of brother Roscoe in Casper, Wyo.   W. S. C.   [Stout #888]

To Will Owen JonesJune 26, [1927], from Casper, Wyo.UVa

To Dorothy Canfield FisherAug. 17, [1927?], from New YorkUVt

Letter reached her in Wyoming, and she meant to answer it from Red Cloud but father had a heart attack. Better now. Came back to New York day before yesterday to vacate apartment. Putting things in storage. Has cancelled trip to France. Brother Douglass plans to take parents to California this winter. Doesn't suppose people who are used to movies will care for Death Comes for the Archbishop, a book without women. Sorry moviemakers will soon be at Acoma.   Willa   [Stout #890]

To Elizabeth Moorhead VermorckenSept. 27, [1927], from Jaffrey, N.H.PM

Friends must get tired of her writing book after book. Fortunately, they aren't all alike. Was in Wyoming this summer, unable to go abroad because of father's illness. Has moved out of Bank Street. Is enjoying being in Jaffrey, but wishes she still had the pleasure of working on something like Archbishop, which she finished there last year. It's hard, losing that pleasure and losing Bank Street at the same time.   Willa Cather   [Stout #903]

To Irene Miner WeiszFeb. 6, 1930, from New YorkNewberry

Appreciates her telegram. So glad Carrie is going to Europe. Expects to sail May 14 on the Berengaria, but needs to get to California first. Probably will take route through Chicago so she can see Roscoe in Wyoming. Mary Virginia working hard and getting by on little money. Sends her groceries now and then. Can't go to Red Cloud; too hard emotionally. P.S.: Please keep information about Mary Virginia secret.  Willie   [Stout #1004]
