To Helen McAfee [of Yale Review]June 22, 1922, from New YorkBeinecke

Will write them an article when she can. Going to Vermont next week.   Willa Cather   [Stout #605]

To Wilbur CrossOct. 11, 1922, from New YorkBeinecke

People seem to have strong feelings about One of Ours, pro or con. Has been thinking he might like a memoir about Mrs. James T. Fields [for Yale Review], but through a misunderstanding Henry Seidel Canby is expecting such a piece from her [for Literary Review, New York Evening Post]. No longer interested in doing the article she discussed with Miss McAfee a year ago. Wants to keep working on a new novelette [ A Lost Lady ].   Willa Sibert Cather   [Stout #626]

To Mrs. George Seibel, Tuesday [Nov. 21, 1922?] details do not all fit with this date, but she may have been wishing to avoid seeing Mrs. Seibel, from New YorkWCPM

Returned from Boston last night [?] for the opening of a friend's play at the Empire [Zoë Akins's The Texas Nightingale]. Leaves Friday [?] for Nebraska to stay through Christmas. Sorry to miss her, but must get ready for the trip. Would like a chance to talk with her about Mr. Seibel's review of One of Ours. P.S.: Do go see The World We Live In.  Willa Cather   [Stout #646]

To Miss McAfee [of the Yale Review]Feb. 7, 1924Beinecke

Hasn't been able to do anything for them. Please drop in some Friday in February.   Willa Cather   [Stout #715]

To George SeibelFeb. 22, 1927WCPM

Has no address in New York just now, but stays at hotels when in town. Now on her way to visit her brother in Wyoming. Glad to hear he and Mrs. Seibel are well. Is well herself, when not in the city.   Willa Cather   [Stout #877]

To Mrs. StowellApr. 11, [1928], from Red Cloud, Nebr.WCPM

Hasn't answered her letter because so much has happened. Father died March 3, a quick, gentle death. Is staying on to get some repairs done on the house for when her mother comes back from California. Will hope to see her next time she is in Boston.   Willa Cather   [Stout #929]

To Carrie Miner Sherwood,  n.d. [late Feb., 1929?] , from New YorkWCPM

Enclosing something [what?] to be placed in her copy of My Ántonia. Leaving for California March 4. [Note: Edith Lewis had wired Helen McAfee on January 16, 1929, that she was on her way to California.]   Willie   [Stout #963]

To Helen SpragueMar. 20, [1932?]WCPM

Weather has been cold since she got back, but once she got over the flu has been going to concerts and operas. Sees Virginia about once a week. Despairing about the Lindberghs' baby! Police don't seem to be doing anything, and no one respects their privacy. When her child arrives, don't smother him with motherly doting. That ruins children.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1102]

To Carrie Miner Sherwood,  n.d. [prob. late Apr. 1932; ref. to letter from Borneo is to a letter from George W. Bullock, a District Officer in British North Borneo, dated Jan. 6, 1932] WCPM

Finds she failed to send check for maintenance on the house and yard. Enclosing a letter from Alfred Knopf about Sigrid Undset, whose books she probably knows; also letter from someone in Borneo. Please return them. Sorry to hear she has had shingles. Appreciates all her kind deeds, seeing that the yard is kept up and so forth. Hopes Helen Mac's delivery will be easy. P.S.: Take a few dollars out of the check for flowers on parents' graves, please.  Willie   [Stout #1105]

To Carrie Miner SherwoodMay 2, [1932?], from Grosvenor Hotel, New YorkWCPM

Letters seem to have crossed. Edith sent Traveler's Aid booklet so Carrie could see pictures of real people the Society has assisted, not as an appeal for donation. Glad to get good news about Helen Mac [baby?] . Had a nice visit with Yehudi Menuhin day before he left for France. What a lovely person!   Willie   [Stout #1108]
