Please forward her thanks to Lizzie, who sent a greeting to mother on Mother's Day. Is staying at the sanitarium. Very sad to watch mother failing. Must get back to New York by mid-June to receive honorary doctorate at Yale. The last she will accept. Only other woman writer honored by Yale in that way was Edith Wharton. Willie [Stout #969]
Wants inscription on window to read simply "In memory of Charles F. Cather, who loved this church." [Stout #970]
Please send recipe for cottage cheese and a container of furniture wax. Island is beautiful, all trees and wildflowers. House very peaceful with a view of sea from cliffs. But all security in life has collapsed since father died. Willie [Stout #975]
Enclosing a letter from an admirer that pleases her a great deal. Leaving for New York tomorrow. Willie [Stout #984]
Glad to hear Dr. Creighton and Mary are accompanying her on her trip. Willie [Stout #992]
Enjoyed her long letter, but can't write back at length because leaving for Philadelphia, where an old friend is dying. P.S.: Jan. 17. Having to go to the funeral—Dr. Lawrence Litchfield, whom she knew in Pittsburgh. Willie [Stout #1001]
Mother about the same. Enjoyed visit with Irene on the way. So glad to hear about their trip plans. Willa [Stout #1009]
Not going to Oberammergau after all, but may see her in Paris. Doesn't know what her banker will be, to receive mail. Will have to wait for consecration of father's window at the church. Maybe at Christmas, when Elsie will be there. Paying for it herself, as care of mother is a strain for everyone. Sanitarium is best possible, but can't make paralysis anything but miserable. Comes away feeling very low every time she is there. P.S.: Hopes Evelyn Brodstone is better. Willie [Stout #1011]
Won't be there when Carrie arrives, but with friends near Marseilles. Can't rearrange schedule. Will probably sail for home September 20. Shouldn't try to see everything in the Louvre but stay with the Grand Gallerie, which has the most worthwhile things. Should see Notre Dame more than once. Hopes all three will enjoy the week in Paris. Willa Cather [Stout #1015]
Thanks for the Easter lilies sent to mother, who is weaker than last year but still in good spirits. Will send the Doctor of Laws hood. Willie [Stout #1047]
