Might sell "Little Annie" to this editor. [Retitled "Her Boss," the story was published in Smart Set, October 1919.] W. S. C. [Stout #416]
Sent the books today. So good of him to try to encourage people from the region. Willa Cather [Stout #486]
Has been ill, or would have written sooner. Has obtained a passport and will sail on May 19. Hopes Hoover will be nominated while she is away. Willa Cather [Stout #505]
Appreciates his good words, though they may make the highbrow critics all the more hostile. Is certain the novel is her best technically, and is certain she knew Claude through and through. Hopes he and Mrs. White will visit again when they are in New York. Willa Cather [Stout #629]
Glad he likes A Lost Lady. Especially pleases her when midwestern people like her books. Going to Aix-les-Bains soon. P.S.: Saw Mr. McClure two weeks ago. Willa Cather [Stout #688]
Can't make any engagements during the Christmas season as three family members will be with her. To be honest, will not make any engagements until March. Was lazy during the summer but is working well now and must avoid interruptions. Spontaneous things are all right, but planned engagements clutter her calendar and her mind. Maybe they can meet for tea when she is out for a walk in Central Park? Willa Cather [Stout #810]
Miss Owen ought to be able to get started in magazines. But sketch genre too easy, and she hasn't disciplined her writing. Willa Cather [Stout #816]
Enjoying this beautiful place after festive visit to Washington. Will be back about middle of the week. W. S. C. [Stout #886]
Leaving Sunday for Wyoming. Noise of the subway is a torture. They are emptying the apartment. Suggests she stay at the New Willard when in Washington. Didn't go to Winchester; to get out of attending a banquet there, told people she would be in Wyoming on May 31. Will probably be in Red Cloud in about a month. Can all meet there and dance the Charleston on the new rug. P.S.: Sending address of Howard Gore. Willa [Stout #887]
Is glad he liked Archbishop. Most of it quite true. Gathered stories from Mexicans and priests and from Lamy's and Machebeuf's letters home. The letters gave her their personalities. Willa Cather [Stout #898]
