To Zoë Akins,  Saturday [Feb. 1914?] , from New YorkHuntington

Sorry to have missed her. Was getting her head x-rayed. Is having a temperature every afternoon and head pains. Doctors can't seem to find what is wrong. Thanks for the flowers. Could Zoë come by Monday for tea?   W. S. C.   [Stout #274]

To Dr. Stacy and Dr. Moench [?] [Nov. 1925?] , on stationery of the Kahler Hotel, Rochester, Minn.UVa

Appreciated the flowers when she left. Enjoyed meeting them.   Willa Cather   [Stout #804]

To Elizabeth Moorhead VermorckenOct. 27, [1926], from Jaffrey, N.H.PM

Appreciates her letter about the new story [ My Mortal Enemy ], which she has been trying to work out for years. Review in the Chicago Tribune gets the point very accurately. Most people say things like, we're all our own worst enemy. Maybe so, but that wasn't the point. Hopes to have some free time this winter. Please call if she is in town. Has had a good time here in Jaffrey, doing some mountain climbing. Likes being away from New York.   W. S. C.   [Stout #855]

To Fanny ButcherOct. 27, [1926], from Jaffrey, N.H.Newberry

She is probably the only person who has perfectly understood the book. Meant to be showing the basic attraction/repulsion of being in a marriage. Henshawes are intense lovers. Please send another copy of the review. Has enjoyed her stay in Jaffrey and feels proud of the mountain climbing she has done. Archbishop begins in the Forum in January. A completely new form for her.   Willa Cather   [Stout #857]

To Blanche Knopf,  Monday [Feb. 28, 1927] HRC

Thanks for the flowers. Will plan to go to the Boston Symphony with her on March 10.   W. S. C.   [Stout #878]

To Carrie Miner Sherwood,  n.d. [prob. late Apr. 1932; ref. to letter from Borneo is to a letter from George W. Bullock, a District Officer in British North Borneo, dated Jan. 6, 1932] WCPM

Finds she failed to send check for maintenance on the house and yard. Enclosing a letter from Alfred Knopf about Sigrid Undset, whose books she probably knows; also letter from someone in Borneo. Please return them. Sorry to hear she has had shingles. Appreciates all her kind deeds, seeing that the yard is kept up and so forth. Hopes Helen Mac's delivery will be easy. P.S.: Take a few dollars out of the check for flowers on parents' graves, please.  Willie   [Stout #1105]

To George SeibelAug. 21, [1932?], from Grand MananWCPM

Appreciates receiving his radio talk. Glad he likes "Old Mrs. Harris," which she believes better achieved than most of her works. Glad to hear about the Seibels' grandchild. Would enjoy corresponding with him again if he won't publish her letters. Sorry to have become so untrusting. P.S.: Saw May Willard in San Francisco last year. Would like to see anything he has written about Thomas Mann, especially The Magic Mountain.  Willa Cather   [Stout #1120]

To Blanche KnopfJuly 20, [1933], from Grand MananHRC

Has had a wonderful two weeks watching the wild flowers bloom. Received a note from Pat yesterday. Niece is here, as well as Edith, but usually she takes her walks alone. May get to work soon.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1187]

To Zoë AkinsAug. 26, [1933], from Grand MananHuntington

Bookends arrived after she left, but secretary is keeping them safe in New York. Has enjoyed the knit jackets. Working on a new book about a giddy young girl, but not enjoying the work as much as she has some books. Island very pretty now with wild flowers. Hated seeing the Italian air fleet pass over earlier.   Willa   [Stout #1189]

To Dorothy Canfield Fisher,  Saturday [Apr. 21, 1934?] UVt

Thanks for the flowers she sent. Hopes to see her in May. Left hand still in splints.   Willa   [Stout #1223]
