To Elizabeth Shepley SergeantSept. 12, [1912], from 1180 Murray Hill, PittsburghPM

Spent two weeks in New York getting the winter's work set. Promised the magazine two stories before Christmas. Wants to lengthen the Swedish story and merge it with the other to make a two-part pastoral. British edition of Alexander looks much better than the American. Has been reading Balzac and the disgusting Idiot by Dostoevsky. Thought the first two parts of Creative Evolution [ Bergson ] were splendid. Everyone seems to be celebrating "The Bohemian Girl" except a reader who thought it immoral.   W. S. C.   [Stout #242]

To Mrs. Henri Raffy [Katherine Foote],  n.d. [pm. Mar. 10, 1937] , from 570 Park Avenue, New YorkPM

So glad to hear from her. World seems to be going down a whirlpool. Hopes they can meet again before it drops to destruction. Remembers the past as being much happier. P.S.: Usually keeps her address secret, but is sending it to her.  Willa Cather   [Stout #1358]

To Vilhjalmur StefanssonMarch 22, 1934Dartmouth

Thanks him for the vote, but why the American Philosophical Society? She is not philosophical and cannot make it through five paragraphs of Hegel. Likes Santayana and Bergson, but only because they are good writers. Nevertheless, thanks him for the vote and, if elected, promises to learn a little more.   Willa Cather
