To Elizabeth Shepley SergeantJune 23, [1925], from Santa FePM

Review was a hard job well done. Is enjoying Santa Fe. Mary Austin is in town and making pronouncements on any subject. Going to San Gabriel tomorrow.   W. S. C.   [Stout #787]

To Mary AustinJune 26, 1926, from Santa FeHuntington

Went to her house a week ago to see if she could work there and has gone back every day since then. Very quiet and congenial. Sits in blue chair with big window open and writes on knee. Likes the big room, breeze coming in at the window. Very generous of her to offer the use of it. Meant to be at Taos, but Tony Luhan has been in hospital in Albuquerque and Mabel with him. Will go in early July, when Miss Foote will be there. Hopes her operation is done soon. Waiting is bad.   Willa Cather   [Stout #840]

To Mary AustinFeb. 10, 1927, from New YorkHuntington

Enjoyed her letter. She shouldn't regret being away from New York; terrible weather and no good plays. Is sending The Time of Man [ Roberts ], which is being much talked of. Doesn't find it interesting herself.   Willa Cather   [Stout #874]

To Mary AustinNov. 9, 1927Huntington

Is homeless and staying at the Grosvenor. Planning to spend Thanksgiving with parents. Reviewers debating whether Archbishop ought to be called a novel. Hopes a few months in New York will help Mary through trying period.   Willa Cather   [Stout #912]

To Mary AustinMay 9, 1928, from New YorkHuntington

Could as soon think of writing a history of China as to write the biography of Amy Lowell that Greenslet was trying to get her to do. Might consider taking up Austin's suggestion [?] but is not writing now. Father died in March. Has been to Mayo Clinic on the way back to New York. May go to California, where mother is visiting Douglass. Troubles almost too much just now.   Willa Cather   [Stout #934]
