Doesn't have anything to offer. Has done little except get settled in new apartment. Will hope to get back to a long story she was working on [prob. Lucy Gayheart], and if so will ask Mr. Knopf to send it to her.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1167]

Was hoping to see him before summer, but since it has turned hot is leaving town. Will hope to see him again in the fall. Recalls that he worked well with young people, back in the magazine days, because he had such a spark of youth himself.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1182]

To Margaret Crofts,  Saturday [Mar. 31, 1934?] LC

Sorry to hear of her father's death. Has been in splints for torn tendon that became inflamed. Has to see doctors twice a day. Will hope to talk with her soon.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1221]

To Mabel Dodge LuhanDec. 18, 1936Beinecke

Was glad to receive her letter, but it creates a problem. Would be glad to contribute to the hospital, but is already contributing heavily to old friends in Nebraska who are in absolute penury from drought. Is cutting back on Christmas presents to do all she can for these people. Government relief seems to go only to those who won't work, and the New Deal has cut into her income from investments. Hope things not as bad in New Mexico as in Nebraska.   Willa   [Stout #1340]

To Zoë AkinsMar. 16, [1937], from New YorkHuntington

Is in bed with lumbago and also is not writing letters because starting a new book. In spite of both of those things, wanted to write and say how much she liked her poems. Keep sending those, not plays written by idiots [ref. to Totheroh]. Hope it's nicer in California than in New York, where it's very cold for March. P.S.: Likes Tovarich [a play by Jacques Deval] very much.  Willa   [Stout #1359]

To Sister LecroisJune 12, 1937unknown present location; previously at Manhattanville College, Purchase, N.Y.

Is very pleased by her letter. Is glad when French people find an authentic note in her two priests [in Death Comes for the Archbishop]. They were modeled on real figures from history whom she studied so closely she felt she knew them. Unfortunately, her student cannot hope to publish a translation of the book into French, as that has already been done and by now has been published. Will have Miss Bloom enclose a copy of the short essay about the writing of the book done for a Catholic publication [ Commonweal ].   Willa Cather   [Stout #1366]
