Was glad to receive her letter, but it creates a problem. Would be glad to contribute to the hospital, but is already contributing heavily to old friends in Nebraska who are in absolute penury from drought. Is cutting back on Christmas presents to do all she can for these people. Government relief seems to go only to those who won't work, and the New Deal has cut into her income from investments. Is in bed with lumbago and also is not writing letters because starting a new book. In spite of both of those things, wanted to write and say how much she liked her poems. Keep sending those, not plays written by idiots [ref. to Totheroh]. Hope it's nicer in California than in New York, where it's very cold for March. Is very pleased by her letter. Is glad when French people find an authentic note in her two priests [in Death Comes for the Archbishop]. They were modeled on real figures from history whom she studied so closely she felt she knew them. Unfortunately, her student cannot hope to publish a translation of the book into French, as that has already been done and by now has been published.
