To Zoë AkinsMay 4, [1918?]Huntington

Interested in her new efforts in play production. Looking forward to seeing her piece [probably "Did It Really Happen?"] in Smart Set. What is she going to do with the Spoon River poet in her anthology? [The "anthology" was a series by Akins published from Feb. 19 to Aug. 13, 1915, in Reedy's Mirror, St. Louis. The series was to have been published in book form but was not until 1994, under the title In the Shadow of Parnassus: A Critical Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry, edited by Catherine Parke.] He is beneath comment. P.S.: Sending some poems not in April Twilights. Novel finished and being set in type.  W. S. C.   [Stout #415]

Glad he likes "Grandmither." Seldom writes verse. Unfortunately, the poems Monroe included in her noted anthology [The New Poetry, 1917] were garbled. Sorry to have been without a telephone, so missed hearing from him when he was in town.   Willa Cather   [Stout #450]

To Allan NevinsFeb. 20, 1927Columbia

Can't take on a review of [Sinclair?] Lewis's book. Has a pressing commitment.   Willa Cather   [Stout #876]

Need to prevent outrageous project, even if it means their publishers have to buy off this Mr. Allan. Enjoying cool and quiet. Island very isolated. Carpenter who built their cottage thinks she is a newspaper writer. Mother weakening.   Willa   [Stout #1069]

To Allan Nevins,  n.d. [c. May 5, 1934] Columbia

Enjoyed reading his book Fremont. Caught the spirit of that thrilling time in America. Hand out of splints about a week ago.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1226]

To Norman Holmes PearsonOct. 23, 1937Beinecke

Cannot agree to send him copies of revised edition of Death Comes for the Archbishop for the section he is using in his anthology, but he may be able to get them from Ferris Greenslet. Not many changes. Likes his selections of poetry. In the prose, wonders why he didn't represent Poe with "The Cask of Amontillado," a better story than "The Fall of the House of Usher." Likes Poe's poetry better than his stories.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1376]

Sorry he did not receive her letter written four years ago. Secretary found the draft and is enclosing it. Glad to have heard from him. Would like to see a new edition of his book on Fremont.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1403]

Doesn't care to join clubs. Has lived in eight different states, each with its own writers' club, state historical society, and so on. Has friends in each. Only way not to offend is to keep from joining any. Did weaken and join the Mark Twain Society on the understanding that her name would not be on the letterhead, and it was put there anyway.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1443]

To Allan NevinsMay 10, [1939?]Columbia

Glad to see the new edition of his book. Looking forward to rereading it.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1451]

To Allan NevinsSept. 26, [1942]Columbia

His letter came while she was in the hospital, but enjoyed reading it afterward. Glad to hear about the Auvergnat priest who liked her book.   Willa Cather   [Stout #1592]
