I want to thank you for the fine display of my books you arranged in Omaha7
when I lectured there8. The lecture
proved a glittering success,– over a thousand people in the audience, and the
tickets five dollars apiece– – – much the largest audience the Fine Art Society had
ever had. Under another cover I am sending you
part part of my "press", I haven't the nerve to send it
all. I don't expect you to read it, of course, but please glance at the headlines,
at the "Hymn of Hate"9, and at the leading editorial10 in the World–Herald11 on the last sheet– that came out two days
after the lecture. They kept the publicity12 going hard for four days.
The greeting from "Father Omaha" on the front page of the morning paper, was very reassuring when it came up to my room with my breakfast tray on the morning before the lecture.
Please show the press display I am sending you to your Publicity men, and try to
convince them that when I set out to make publicity, I can do it. Of course, between
you and me, it's usually a waste of energy
,; but this time, in my own state13, it meant something. I find letters
from every lecture bureau in New York2,
offering to take me on tour!
Please send back my publicity display, after you have been impressed by it.Faithfully yours Willa Cather
I went to see all the big booksellers in Chicago14, besides lecturing for the College Club.
