I have studied the contents of your letter3 carefully. Of course you know better than I whether you can afford to pay a higher royalty on the Riverside edition. Alfred Knopf4 pays me ten cents a copy on the little Borzoi pocket edition of YOUTH AND THE BRIGHT MEDUSA5.
I have no doubt that the cheap edition of O PIONEERS!6
has increased the number of its readers. But I think now the time has come to stop
issuing the book in a cheap edition. The rather unusual success of DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP7 and SHADOWS ON THE ROCK8 will, I think, do quite as much for
the future of O PIONEERS! as a cheap
edition would do. The people who are enthusiastic about those two books will go back
and hunt up the earlier books. I think we will agree that this is true, so please be my good friend9 and cut off the
Riverside edition of O PIONEERS.! Of course you will want to sell the
copies you have in stock, but please do not print any more and please restore the
original $2.50 edition. I am sure there will be a steady, if not a large, demand for
it.
I am going North10 in a few days now but letters will be forwarded.
Faithfully yours, Willa CatherI have not yet had time to read "Conquistador"11, but I'm taking it away with me. Thank you for sending it.
