passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
I am up and dressed today and feel ever so much better. I hope to start for home4 a week from Monday. I am wondering how the crops are at home this year, and whether it would be convenient for you to let me have about five hundred dollars when I get home. I have paid my English doctor5 and my hospital expenses, but I have still my surgeon and doctor to pay and my salary stopped July 15th and I will not get any more until I go back to work October 1st. My money is all in mortgages and in a savings bank where I have to give six months notice. I had a considerable checking account, but my unexpected expenses when I was ill in the winter6 and now again have brought me up with a short turn. I want to get things paid off without asking for an advance from the office if I can, and if it is perfectly convenient for you to spare that much money just now.
I do hope you wont have a chance to sell Max before I get home, father. I should like to drive him a little more—I don't mind if the buggy is ramshackle. I know I'll like to ride in your new motor, but nothing quite takes the place of driving. It's quiet and low and occupies one's mind a little. So don't rush Max on the market.
With words of love to you all Willa
