- In a review, Cather says that "Carlyle usually thought it necessary to realize a character completely and went about it much as an actor does when he creates a character for the stage. And like most actors, he only suceeded in projecting himself into the part in hand. In his Cromwell, in Mohammed, in Burns, in Dante, we find only phases of Thomas Carlyle."
