- Il Fuoco (translated as The Flame of Life) is an erotic novel based on D'Annunzio's relationship with the actress Eleonora Duse. Cather calls it "a shameless sale of confidence of the most sacred kind for money, a savage and shameless attack upon a woman who is still living and who is ill and unhappy."
