- Note Relating to Cather
- "For a long time there has been a vague idea floating through this country that there ought to be a great 'western school' of literature. That Chicago should become a sort of Athens, and that Kansas City should become the seat of culture and art as well as of pork packing. It has been rather a fatal idea, and it has completely spoiled Hamlin Garland, who without this fad might have been a useful and productive man."
