- In The Song of the Lark, when trouble threatens, Mrs. Tellamantez soothes herself by combing her long black hair. Thea reflects, "Mexican women are like the Spartans; when they are in trouble, in love, under stress of any kind, they comb and comb their hair." See Herodotus, book 7, chs. 207-209, for a description of a spy reporting that the Spartans were combing their hair--as if they were in danger (March 724).
