In The Song of the Lark, Dr Archie pastes a poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes into one of his medical textbooks. Holmes, too, was a physician.

In a 1902 Gazette article, Cather writes: "Longfellow, Bryant, Holmes, Lowell and even Whittier for the most part endeavored to apply the methods and sentiment of English poetry to their New World environment."
