- In Alexander's Bridge, Alexander Bartley's double life is said to be like a "cannon rolling in the hold of the vessel." According to March (369), the reference is to a scene in Hugo's novel in which a gunner struggles desperately with his loose cannon that has turned into a destructive "monster."
