In an 1897 Courier article Cather writes: "You all saw [Charles Stanley Reinhart's] picture 'Washed Ashore' at the fair in Chicago and felt in it that same mysterious charm of the vast sea spaces which haunts Pierre Loti's novels."
In a 1900 Library article Cather says painter H.O. Tanner's work "reminds me of Pierre Loti's faculty of infusing absolute personality into environment ..."
