- The epigraph to Shadows on the Rock is from letter no. 114 (August 12, 1653) of Marie Guyard (Marie de l'Incarnation). Its translation is: "You ask me for seeds and bulbs of the flowers of this country. We have some come from France for our garden, not having any here that are very rare or very beautiful. Everything is wild--the flowers as well as the people."
