According to a 1902 Journal article, Cather says of Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor: "There is so much beating of bodies and staggering of the drunken, that one wonders whether Voltaire were not bearing this particular comedy [in mind] when he describes Shakespeare as a 'drunken savage with glimpses of genius.'"

In "A Night at Greenway Court," there appear to be several allusions to Voltaire, "the wise man of France" who said that "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him." In One of Ours, Claude smiles as he recalls that his mother believes that the French Catholics are responsible for the "grinning atheist, Voltaire."
