I have just received a letter which calls me to Portland, Maine4, on Thursday, so that I shall have to miss the pleasure of seeing you on Friday. If I return before you leave town for the summer I shall take the liberty of telephoning you to see whether you will give me one more chance. Individual Annotations
82 Washington Place (New York City): Cather's second apartment in New York City and the first one she shared with Edith Lewis, located in Greenwich Village in the Manhattan borough. Cather and Lewis lived here from 1908 to 1911.
Person Annotations
Ladd-Franklin, Christine (1847-1930). American psychologist and
mathematician. Christine Ladd studied astronomy under Mari
Mitchell at Vassar College, graduating in 1869. Admitted to Johns Hopkins
University as “C. Ladd,” she met with great opposition when the school
learned she was a woman. She fulfilled the requirements for a PhD in
mathematics in 1882 but was not awarded her degree until 1926. Ladd married
fellow mathematician Fabian Franklin; they had two children. They moved to
New York in 1910, where Ladd-Franklin continued to advocate for women in
science, continued her research in vision and color, and taught, unpaid, at
Columbia University. It is unclear how Cather came to know
Ladd-Franklin.
