passage written by Cather on separate enclosure. | written text |
Mrs. McClung4 was pulling up splendidly but yesterday had a relapse which I am afraid is very serious. I do nothing but walk and read. I’ve found vast consolation in Michelet5's history6 and have just finished tome troisième7. Have you ever read it all? It’s exciting enough to hold one under any circumstances, and not overly rhetorical. It has been a veritable life preserver this last week.
Do make a separate paper8 of the Burgundy part if you can. It has such a distinct flavor that I think it would be almost better entirely in its own setting.
When you can, do take up Wagner9's Autobiography10. It tells you everything that you’ve always wanted to know about him. All the reviews of it are childish; he was a large enough person to be honest about himself, and he has so much to say that he does not stop to make out a case for himself. It’s all action. From his earliest years there was plenty doing, and he wastes mighty little time in reflection.
Please get better very fast. As to the people who don’t like the Sanitarium11, I simply smile at them. It is sketchy, but the idea is there.
